Microsoft's Surface Book 2 is a powerful laptop with a modular design, a touch display available in two sizes, and a high price. One way to save a bit of money at checkout is to dial back the size of your solid-state drive (SSD). To add more storage after purchase, you can use a standard SD card, but it will stick out and run the risk of being damaged during everyday use. However, a special adapter allows you to tidily fit a microSD card into the Surface Book 2 without any risk of damage.

If you have a Surface Pro or Surface Pro 2: Find the SD card slot along the right side of the device (when looking at the screen) Slide the card into the slot (look at the pic below for facing). If it won’t go in easily, don’t force it just make sure the card isn’t upside down.

How to add storage to your Surface Book on the cheap
The BaseQi microSD adapter sits flush along the edge of your Surface Book 2, and there are sizes to fit either 13.5- or 15-inch configurations. Here's how to get everything set up.
Slide the microSD card into the BaseQi adapter.

Lisa Gade does a hands-on first look review of the Microsoft Surface Pro 3. This is a 12' Windows 8.1 Pro tablet with a 2160 x 1440 display that supports both pen and touch. It runs on 4th gen Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 CPUs with Intel HD 4400 graphics, and you can get it with 4 or 8 gigs of DDR3 RAM (not user upgradable) and 64, 128, 256 and 512 gig SSD drives. The tablet weighs 1.76 lbs. and is 0.36' thick, and it's usable in portrait mode thanks to the 3:2 display aspect ratio. It comes with an N-Trig pen for note-taking and digital artwork rather than the Wacom pen found on older Surface Pro models. The tablet has the power of an Ultrabook packed into a small package, but the 0 Type Cover is sold separately for those who need laptop style functionality. It has dual band WiFi 802.11AC, Bluetooth 4.0, a microSD card slot under the kickstand, a USB 3.0 port, 3.5mm audio jack and a mini DisplayPort. The Surface Pro 3 has received positive reviews. David Pogue suggested 'The upshot is that, with hardly any thickness or weight penalty, the kickstand and the Type Cover let you transform your 1.8-pound tablet into an actual, fast, luxury laptop'. Pogue said that the Surface Pro 3's form factor works well as a tablet, in contrast to the Surface Pro 2, whose bulk and weight limited its appeal as a tablet. Pogue also stated that the new multi-stage kickstand, 3:2 screen aspect ratio, and new Type Cover 3 detachable keyboard made it a competent laptop. [38]

I have re-installed the Surface pro 3 image and it is still missing. No matter what SD card I insert, the driver does not show. USB port works great and the SD cards will work fine in a SD reader plugged into the USB port - just not in the SD card reader slot. I don't think it is a hardware issue although that is always possible. The port disappeared after the update and going back did not fix. I noticed that the BIOS does now have the ability to turn on and off the SD card port, but changing it did not seem to affect the being able to see the card. It is very frustrating with Microsoft's support on the Surface Pro 3. It's their hardware but they can't seem to figure how to make it work correctly. And the Surface is so hard to repair too. I love the screen size and resolution but I may have to re-think how important that is compared to a device that works the way it is suppose to. It seems to only solution is to wait and HOPE that Microsoft comes out with a fix.
